Spring Is In The Air

Finally! Warm sun and cool breezes are coming our way. We've been spending bunches of time outside lately and last week we headed to our favorite little gem, Briar Bush Nature Center. To have this place 5 minutes away is such a blessing. It's always a great outing and the kids have such a blast.

Grace has this new thing going where she insists on drawing pictures for perfect strangers. On this day she insisted on drawing a picture for the people who work at the nature center. I negotiated our way down to one picture which she proudly presented to the gentleman behind the desk. This guy made the biggest fuss over it. It was simply adorable and he promised to hang it where everyone could see and even wrote her name on it so everyone would know who brought it. Grace gave me the "See mom? I told you it's nice to bring pictures to random people" look.

The highlight of our visit was the ferret (named "Stinky") who was out and about inflicting terror on the turtle community. Apparently it's routine to let Stinky have the run of the place and the kids were tickled to chase it around (with me behind them shouting things like Don't touch it's head"--"Too rough"--"It'll Bite You!"--so not the cool mom). A woman who I assumed was one of the animal handlers kept cornering Stinky so the kids would have a chance to pet him. At one point she was in a meeting and kindly stopped to help Grace get one more quick pet in. It was a great morning.

So the next day the mail comes and it's a newsletter from Briar Bush. There's a picture on the front page of the gentleman who made a fuss and Stinky's handler. Ends up the woman is the executive director and the gentleman, president of the board. I have to admit I was surprised. And tickled all the more.

Here's a few random pics from the day:

Tom noted Grace makes this face a lot. She really does-especially when she's excited to see turtles!
"Cole" the chinchilla is actually getting his exercise in that ball. Luke had to be removed from the ball. Little boys and exercising animals in giant balls just don't mix. Such sadness. . .
Here is Luke getting a close up of Stinky who is pilfering the turtle's lunch
